Supporting Recovery After Traumatic Brain Injury
An individualized approach to movement, function and independence
A traumatic brain injury (TBI) can affect people in very different ways.
Changes may involve movement, balance, coordination, endurance and confidence, as well as the ability to manage everyday activities. The effects and the recovery journey will be different for every individual.
At Neuro Recovery Institute, we provide individualized, technology-assisted rehabilitation designed to help people living with the effects of traumatic brain injury continue working towards greater movement, function and independence.
Our approach combines clinical oversight, one-to-one support and the Outbounder Advanced Rehabilitation System, an FDA registered Class II medical device for therapeutic exercise and rehabilitation.
Recovery with purpose
Our approach begins with the individual rather than the technology.
We look at current abilities, ongoing challenges, previous rehabilitation and the goals that still matter to you.
From there, we develop an individualized program designed to provide appropriate levels of movement, repetition and challenge.
Using the Outbounder, clients take part in supported full-body movement within immersive virtual environments. Robotic assistance and real-time feedback allow activities to be adapted to the individual while encouraging active participation and repeated practice.
Why repetition matters
The brain has the ability to adapt and form new connections — a process known as neuroplasticity.
Following a brain injury, purposeful movement and repeated practice can play an important role in rehabilitation and continued recovery.
At NRI, our programs emphasize repetition, engagement and task-specific practice, while adapting each session to the individual’s abilities, tolerance and goals.
Measuring what matters
We believe progress should be assessed rather than assumed.
Clients are evaluated using recognized clinical outcome measures appropriate to their individual needs. These may include assessments of balance, mobility, upper-limb function and everyday independence, alongside observations from the client, family and clinical team.
But progress is not simply a score.
For someone recovering from a traumatic brain injury, progress might mean greater confidence standing or walking, improved coordination, completing an everyday task more independently or being able to participate more fully in family and community life.
Every brain injury is different and outcomes will vary. Our role is to identify meaningful goals, measure change and help each individual continue exploring what may be possible.
Working with clients and families
Traumatic brain injury often affects families as well as individuals.
Spouses, partners, parents, adult children and caregivers may play an important role throughout recovery, and their observations can provide valuable insight into changes that may not always appear in a clinical assessment.
At NRI, caregivers are welcome to be involved in the rehabilitation journey. We aim to create a supportive environment in which clients and families understand what we are doing, why we are doing it and what we are seeing along the way.
Is NRI right for you?
NRI may be suitable for people living with the effects of traumatic brain injury who want to explore an active, individualized approach to continued rehabilitation.
Depending on individual needs and goals, this may include working towards improvements in:
Balance and stability
Walking and mobility
Coordination and motor control
Upper-limb function
Endurance
Confidence with everyday activities
Independence
Every person begins with a conversation and clinical assessment so we can understand their injury, medical history, current abilities, previous rehabilitation and goals, and determine whether the NRI approach is appropriate.
Recovery after traumatic brain injury does not follow a single timetable.
Our aim is to help each individual remain active, engaged and working towards the goals that continue to matter to them.
Talk to us about TBI rehabilitation
If you are living with the effects of a traumatic brain injury, or supporting a family member who is, we would be very happy to talk with you.
A complimentary consultation gives you the opportunity to meet the NRI team, tell us about your recovery so far and the goals that still matter to you, learn how the Outbounder is used and discuss whether our approach could be right for you.
