Supporting caregivers
Stroke recovery affects more than one person.
Behind every client is someone carrying responsibility: physically, emotionally and practically.
A spouse. A partner. A son or daughter. Often exhausted. Often uncertain. Always invested.
At Neuro Recovery Institute, supporting caregivers is not an afterthought. It is built into how we operate.
Lived experience
Our founder, Martin, spent 13 years caring for his wife Dipa following her brain tumour diagnosis. He understands the pressure of advocating for progress when others say recovery has plateaued. He understands fatigue. He understands hope.
That lived experience shapes NRI. Caregivers are not visitors. They are part of the recovery system.
Clarity creates confidence
Rehabilitation can feel technical and intimidating.
We explain:
· What we are doing
· Why it matters
· What progress realistically looks like
· How neuroplasticity supports continued recovery
When caregivers understand the process, anxiety reduces and confidence grows.
Inclusion improves outcomes
Where appropriate, caregivers are encouraged to:
· Observe sessions
· Understand progress markers
· Reinforce safe movement at home
· Ask direct questions
Recovery is stronger when the home environment aligns with the therapy environment.
Sustainable recovery
Burnout is real. We recognize that protecting caregiver energy is part of protecting long-term progress. Realistic optimism, honest conversations and structured feedback help families stay steady through a non-linear journey.
Supporting the caregiver is not simply compassionate. It improves outcomes!
And finally…
