Supporting Caregivers
Living with a neurological condition or recovering from a neurological injury affects more than one person.
Behind many clients is a spouse, partner, family member or caregiver providing practical and emotional support, often while managing uncertainty and change themselves.
At Neuro Recovery Institute, we believe caregivers should feel informed, included and supported throughout the NRI journey.
Lived experience
Our founder, Martin, spent 13 years supporting his wife Dipa through her stroke recovery and later cancer diagnosis.
That experience gave him first-hand understanding of the challenges families can face, advocating for someone they love, managing uncertainty, coping with fatigue and continuing to look for possibilities when progress may have slowed.
That lived experience continues to shape the way NRI works with clients and families.
Clarity creates confidence
Neurological rehabilitation can sometimes feel technical or unfamiliar.
We aim to explain:
What we are doing
Why we are doing it
What we are measuring
What progress may realistically look like
When families understand the process, they are better able to participate in conversations about goals, progress and next steps.
Keeping caregivers involved
Where appropriate, caregivers are welcome to:
Observe sessions
Understand progress measures
Ask questions
Share observations about changes outside the clinic
Family members can often notice changes in confidence, independence, communication or everyday activities that may not always appear in a clinical assessment. Their perspective can therefore be an important part of understanding the wider picture.
Supporting the whole family
Caring for someone with a neurological condition can be demanding.
We recognize the importance of realistic expectations, honest conversations and clear communication throughout what can sometimes be a long and non-linear journey.
Supporting caregivers is not separate from supporting our clients. It is part of creating an environment in which everyone involved feels informed and supported.
And while you’re here…
Our center is designed to make caregivers accompanying a loved one feel welcome too.
Whether you want to enjoy a refreshment, catch up on emails or take a work call while a session is underway, our team will do what we can to make your time at NRI comfortable.
