Supporting People Recovering from Stroke

Continuing recovery beyond the expected plateau

Recovery after a stroke is different for every person. For some, progress happens quickly. For others, recovery continues over months or years, and many people come to NRI after being told that they may have reached a plateau.

At Neuro Recovery Institute, we provide individualized, technology-assisted rehabilitation designed to help stroke survivors continue working towards improvements in movement, mobility, function and independence.

Our approach combines clinical oversight, one-to-one support and the Outbounder Advanced Rehabilitation System, an FDA registered Class II medical device for therapeutic exercise and rehabilitation.

Recovery with purpose

Our approach begins with the individual rather than the technology. We look at current abilities, previous rehabilitation, ongoing challenges and the goals that still matter to you.

From there, we develop an individualized program designed to provide appropriate levels of movement, repetition and challenge.

The Outbounder provides immersive, multi-sensory movement experiences that encourage active participation and repeated practice as part of a broader clinically guided rehabilitation program.

Why repetition matters

The brain has a remarkable ability to adapt and form new connections, a process known as neuroplasticity.

Following a stroke, rehabilitation can use purposeful movement and repeated practice to support the brain as it adapts and relearns.

At NRI, our programs emphasize repetition, engagement and task-specific practice, while adapting each session to the individual’s abilities and goals.

Measuring what matters

We believe progress should be assessed rather than assumed.

Clients are evaluated using recognized clinical outcome measures appropriate to their individual needs. These may include measures of balance, mobility, upper-limb function and everyday independence, alongside observations from the client, family and clinical team.

But progress is not just a score.

One stroke survivor who travelled to NRI for treatment told us:

“After completing the program, I’ve seen an increase in balance, which has allowed me to walk upstairs more smoothly than previously, which translates to another step towards gaining complete independence back.”

She also described improvements in everyday tasks and increased movement in her affected hand, with the goal of returning to work.

Every stroke recovery journey is different and outcomes will vary. Progress experienced by one client should not be taken as a prediction of what another individual may achieve.

Working with clients and families

Stroke recovery often affects more than one person. Family members and caregivers can play an important role in understanding progress, reinforcing safe movement and supporting recovery outside the clinic.

At NRI, caregivers are welcome to be involved in the rehabilitation journey. We aim to explain what we are doing, why it matters and what progress may realistically look like, helping clients and families remain informed and involved.

Is NRI right for you?

NRI may be suitable for stroke survivors who have completed traditional rehabilitation but remain motivated to pursue further functional gains.

You may be looking to improve:

  • Walking and mobility

  • Balance

  • Endurance

  • Upper-limb function

  • Confidence with everyday activities

  • Independence

Every person begins with a conversation and clinical assessment so that we can understand your medical history, current abilities, previous rehabilitation and goals, and determine whether the NRI approach is appropriate for you.

Being told that progress has slowed or plateaued does not necessarily mean there is nothing more to explore.

Our aim is to help you continue working towards the goals that still matter to you.

Talk to us about stroke rehabilitation

If you are recovering from a stroke, or supporting a family member who is, we would be very happy to talk with you.

A complimentary consultation gives you the opportunity to meet the NRI team, tell us about your recovery so far and the goals that still matter to you, learn how the Outbounder is used and discuss whether our approach could be right for you.
