Supporting People Living with Parkinson’s
Supporting movement, mobility and confidence
Parkinson’s Disease can gradually make everyday movement more difficult. Changes in balance, mobility, coordination, posture and confidence can affect not only the person living with Parkinson’s, but also the family members and caregivers supporting them.
At Neuro Recovery Institute, we provide individualized, technology-assisted support designed to help people living with Parkinson’s remain active, engaged and working towards the things that matter to them.
Our approach combines clinical oversight, one-to-one support and the Outbounder Advanced Rehabilitation System, an FDA registered Class II medical device for therapeutic exercise and rehabilitation.
Movement with purpose
Parkinson’s is different for every person. That is why our approach begins with the individual rather than the technology.
We look at current abilities, challenges and personal goals, then develop an individualized program designed to provide appropriate levels of movement, repetition and challenge.
Measuring what matters
We believe progress should be assessed rather than assumed. Clients are evaluated using recognized measures of balance, mobility and everyday function, alongside observations from the client, family and clinical team.
One NRI client, more than eight years after his Parkinson’s diagnosis, completed 24 Outbounder sessions over approximately ten weeks. His Berg Balance Scale score improved by 56% and his Timed Up and Go result improved by 45%. By the end of the program, he was also able to get on and off the Outbounder independently.
But the numbers only tell part of the story. His wife told us:
“Recently he has been connecting with me more emotionally and asking me how I am feeling and if I am tired. A few months ago he would never have done that. I have been doing this for 8 years now and I have never seen him like this.”
Every person living with Parkinson’s is different and outcomes will vary. These early results are encouraging, but they are not a prediction of what another individual may achieve.
Working with clients and families
Parkinson’s affects families as well as individuals.
We therefore welcome the involvement of spouses, adult children and caregivers throughout the NRI journey.
Their observations can provide valuable insight into changes that may not always appear in a clinical assessment, for example: confidence at home, willingness to participate, communication, independence and the everyday things that contribute to quality of life.
Our aim is to create a supportive environment in which clients and families understand what we are doing, why we are doing it and what we are seeing along the way.
Is NRI right for you?
NRI may be suitable for people living with Parkinson’s who want to explore an active, individualized approach to maintaining movement, mobility and function.
Every person begins with a conversation and clinical assessment so that we can understand their medical history, current abilities and goals, and determine whether the NRI approach is appropriate for them.
There are no promises of a particular outcome. Our aim is to help each individual keep moving, remain engaged and explore what they may still be capable of achieving.
