Recovery does not necessarily stop
Many people with Parkinson’s are told there is little that can be done to arrest the symptoms, let alone reverse them. Neuroplasticity demonstrates that the brain retains the ability to adapt when appropriately challenged.
At the Neuro Recovery Institute in Montclair we use the Outbounder Advanced rehabilitation System to provide an intensive and highly engaging rehabilitation experience. The Parkinson’s Clinical Outcomes Program is overseen by a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT). Robotic assistance, full-body movement and immersive virtual environments work together so each client can participate actively, practice meaningful movements and remain motivated throughout their sessions.
We have already seen encouraging progress at NRI
In just over a month of therapy sessions (10 sessions, 5 weeks), one patient's balance score jumped from 23 to 34 out of 56, a 48% improvement.
His wife, who has supported him for eight years, said:
“I have been doing this for 8 years now and I have never seen him like this.”
She has also observed meaningful everyday changes, including:
Resuming telling jokes after approximately 12 months without doing so
Better conversations and ability to follow steps
Increased initiative and desire for independence at home
Independently using his toothbrush and toothpaste,
Putting dishes in the sink, getting out of bed, clipping his own seatbelt, and tying his own shoes again
Remembering two of his four grandchildren’s names (previously none)
The clinical team and technicians have noted greater attentiveness, quicker responses,
more interactive conversation, and a return of humour
A physical therapist who later saw improvements in his gait commented:
“This is different — something you’ve been doing has been working”
Individual results vary. These observations reflect one person’s experience and are shared with consent
